Facebook Ad Account: How to Verify Your Payment Method (2026)

Grace Whitmore Grace Whitmore Published on September 17, 2026 · inGuides

If Facebook asks you to verify the payment method on your ad account, it is usually one of three things: a 1.01 USD verification hold on a new card, a 3D Secure (3DS) check run by your bank, or a payment method restriction that shows the banner "Verify your payment method to run ads". Each one has a different fix: the hold clears on its own, while the bank check and the restriction both need you to complete a step before ads can run again.

This guide is based on the Meta Business Help Center articles on payment restrictions, temporary holds of funds, the 1.01 USD verification hold, failed payments, adding a bank account, and reconfirming payment methods in India, as published in September 2026. It covers the official verification paths only. If your ad account is already disabled because a charge failed or because of unusual payment activity, start with our guide to an ad account disabled because of a payment method instead.

Which verification are you looking at?

What you see

What it is

Do you need to act?

A 1.01 USD charge right after adding a card

Verification hold that validates the card

No, it is removed automatically

A pending amount on your card that is not an ad charge

Temporary hold of funds

Usually no; only if Meta cannot place it

A one-time password or bank app prompt while adding or using a card

3DS verification by the issuing bank

Yes, complete it with your bank

Banner: "Verify your payment method to run ads"

Payment method restriction

Yes, verify the saved method

Banner: "We weren't able to place a temporary hold of funds on your card"

Failed temporary hold

Yes, follow the banner

Prompt to verify an online banking account

Direct debit setup

Yes, before the bank account can pay

The first two are routine and happen to accounts in good standing. The rest are prompts where delivery can stop until the step is done.

The 1.01 USD verification hold

Meta describes this as a temporary authorization to validate your credit card. It is not an ad charge. Meta says the amount is removed from the card automatically, typically within 3 to 5 business days. If the hold is still there after that, the timing is on the bank side, so the bank is the one to ask.

Temporary hold of funds

A temporary hold is different from the verification hold. According to Meta, it may be placed on your chosen payment method to confirm there are enough funds to run ads, which helps prevent later disruptions from payment failures. What Meta states about it:

  • The hold is not a definite charge. You are only charged for the ads actually delivered.
  • The amount depends on the estimated cost of your campaign, your budgets and other aspects of the account, and for the hold period it will not exceed the budget you set.
  • Ads may not run until a hold is successfully placed, and resume as soon as Meta confirms it with your bank.
  • Meta releases the hold after 1 to 3 days or after a successful charge, but banks can take up to 5 to 7 business days to release it, so you may briefly see both a charge and a hold on your statement.
  • If the bank has not released a hold after 7 business days, Meta says to contact your bank directly.

This is automatic and usually needs nothing from you. It becomes your problem only when the hold fails, which is covered below.

3DS verification when adding or using a card

3D Secure is a verification controlled by the bank that issued the card. It usually asks for a one-time password (OTP) or an approval in the bank's app. In its failed payment article, Meta says 3DS is mandatory in some countries when you add a new card, and that it can fail because of a wrong CVV or OTP, an OTP that never arrives, connection problems at the card network, or the bank's own internal rules.

What to check before you try again:

  • The card is enabled for online transactions and has a CVV.
  • The phone number tied to the card is one you can receive an OTP on right now.
  • The card number, expiry date and CVV are entered exactly.
  • The card is not expired and has enough available balance.

If 3DS keeps failing, Meta's guidance is to contact the card issuer or add a different payment method. Repeated attempts will not get past a rule the bank is applying.

"Verify your payment method to run ads"

This banner comes from a payment method restriction. Meta's article on payment restrictions says it may limit the use of certain payment methods, such as cards, because of suspected unauthorized access to the ad account or unverified ownership of the payment method. The goal, in Meta's words, is to prevent unauthorized use while letting the legitimate owner verify and regain secure access.

Delivery is affected when the restricted method is the only saved method, or when every saved method needs verification.

To verify, Meta lists two routes. You can follow the actions shown in Meta Business Support Home, or do it from Ads Manager:

  1. Go to Ads Manager.
  2. Find the banner that reads "Verify your payment method to run ads".
  3. Click Verify payment method.
  4. Complete the authentication, which is typically 3DS with your bank.

If you cannot complete it, Meta says to reach out to Support rather than keep retrying.

Two details from the same article are easy to miss:

  • Available funds can keep ads running. If your account supports available funds, you may still be able to add funds with a local payment method or a card that is already verified.
  • Share one verified method across accounts. You can add your preferred payment method to your business portfolio and share it with the ad accounts connected to that portfolio. Meta says this reduces the number of verifications needed when several ad accounts use the same restricted method.

When the temporary hold fails

Sometimes Meta cannot place the hold, and ad delivery is restricted as a result. The banner reads "We weren't able to place a temporary hold of funds on your card". The fix Meta gives is to open Ads Manager, go to that banner and follow the instructions, or use the actions in Business Support Home. Once a hold goes through, ads can resume and the banner disappears. Adding funds is also an option, though Meta notes that automatic payments on that method will still come with a temporary hold.

Meta does not list separate causes for a failed hold. The card checks in the 3DS section above, such as available balance, card limits and the bank's own rules, are the reasonable place to start.

Automatic billing restriction

A related restriction stops automatic billing instead of a single card. Meta says that after unusual payment activity it may restrict automatic billing and unverifiable payment methods, which can pause ads. The documented way back is to add funds with a verified payment method, from the banner that reads "Action required" or "Your ad account has been restricted from advertising", or from Business Support Home.

Verifying a bank account (direct debit)

In countries where direct debit is supported for Meta ads, a bank account has to be verified before it can pay. From Meta's article on adding a bank account:

  • It is only available on ad accounts set up for automatic billing, and you must be an admin of the ad account.
  • You cannot add a bank account while the ad account has unsettled charges. Settle them with another method first.
  • The path is Billing, then Payment settings, then Add payment method, then Online banking, and then you follow the verification instructions.
  • Switching to a new bank account can take 3 to 4 days to process. Meta suggests adding a card or PayPal for automatic billing in the meantime.

India: reconfirming payment methods with OTP

For business portfolios with the currency set to the Indian rupee, Meta requires a one-time OTP authentication on payment methods, and campaigns are paused until it is done or a new method is added. You need full control of the business portfolio and its ad accounts. The flow starts in Settings, then Payments, where you select the card and click Reauthorize card for India. After that you complete the billing update for each ad account in Ads Manager Payment settings, using Reconfirm account or Enable OTP, or by adding a payment method.

What makes verification harder

These are either named in Meta's articles or work against the process:

  • Using a payment method that is not yours. Unverified ownership is one of the stated reasons for the restriction, and Meta advises against buying, borrowing or renting ad accounts or other Meta assets.
  • Adding the same card to many ad accounts. Meta may limit this; typically one payment method can be added to up to 10 ad accounts.
  • Weak account security. Meta links payment restrictions to suspected unauthorized access, and recommends two-factor authentication and minimum necessary permissions on the business portfolio.
  • Frequent failed or disputed payments. Meta lists high rates of failed or disputed payments as a trigger, and recommends consistent spending with a high payment success rate.

Where AdBegin fits

Payment verification goes smoother when it is clear who can access each ad account and which payment method belongs to which business. AdBegin is an ad workspace that keeps accounts, access and working environments organized together. It does not take part in Meta's payment checks and cannot verify a payment method for you.

FAQ

Why is Facebook asking me to verify my payment method?

Usually because Meta has restricted a saved payment method over suspected unauthorized access to the ad account or unverified ownership of the method. You may also be seeing a routine 3DS check from your bank, or a verification hold on a new card, which needs no action.

What is the 1.01 USD charge from Facebook?

It is a verification hold, a temporary authorization Meta uses to validate a credit card. Meta says it is removed automatically, typically within 3 to 5 business days.

How do I verify my payment method in Ads Manager?

Find the banner "Verify your payment method to run ads", click Verify payment method, and complete the authentication with your bank. You can also follow the steps shown in Meta Business Support Home. If it keeps failing, contact Meta Support.

Can I keep running ads while the payment method is unverified?

If your account supports available funds, Meta says you may still be able to add funds with a local payment method or a verified card. Otherwise, ads that rely only on the restricted method stay paused until it is verified.

Why does 3DS verification keep failing?

Meta lists a wrong CVV or OTP, an OTP that is not delivered, card network connection issues and the bank's internal rules. Check the card details and the phone number tied to the card, then contact your bank or add a different payment method.

The short version

A 1.01 USD verification hold and a temporary hold of funds are automatic and need no action. A 3DS prompt is your bank checking the card, so the fix sits with the card details, the OTP phone number and the bank. The banner "Verify your payment method to run ads" is a payment method restriction: verify from that banner or from Business Support Home, keep ads running with available funds if your account supports them, and contact Meta Support if verification will not complete.
